Here we go again. Wildcats look to capture their 4th straight AAA State Championship as they kick the season off with the Bulldogs tomorrow night. The programs are 1 and 2 in most NM titles with Artesia having won 27 and Lovington 18. Last season's opener between the two teams ended with the Bulldogs coming out on top of a sloppy game 35-14. Both teams combined for 11 turnovers as the Wildcats had 8 and Bulldogs 3.
Artesia is coming off a disappointing 2011 season in which they finished 6-6 and lost to rival Goddard in the semi-finals of the 4A playoffs. Artesia will be led by OL Alex Donaghe, RB Zeke Montoya, and first year QB Trevor Eulenbach.
Lovington is coming off a 9-4 season in which they won its 3rd straight championship for the 2nd time in school history. The Cats return good experience on the offensive side of the ball including the backfield of QB David Robles, Rb's Justin Bromley and Cesar Trevizo. Defensively Lovington will be looking for new faces to step up and fill the spots on a defensive that only gave up 17 points in last years playoffs.
Prediction - Lovington hasn't beaten the Bulldogs since 2001 and hasn't won in Artesia since 1989. The drought continues as the Bulldog Bowl is one of the toughest places to win. Artesia4 35 Lovington 14
